By Strahov monastery

21 April. By Strahov Monastery, Hradčany; headquarters of PNP (Museum of Czech Literature). The complex of buildings at Strahov was proposed by Bishop of Olomouc, Jindřich Zdík, and founded in 1143 by Prince Vladislav. In 1950, all the buildings here were confiscated by the State. In 1951 Strahov Library re-opened to the public; it also served as the repository for monastic libraries that were confiscated en masse upon the closure of monasteries at this time. The library became a part of the Museum of Czech Literature (PNP), which has had its main offices here since 1952. The Institute for Czech and World Literature at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences was also installed here (until 1991). In 1990, the Monastery was returned to the Premonstratensian Order (the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov).
